Once Jupyter installs ipykernel into the env, python is installed along with it. To update the env, right now running the refresh api and waiting for the env change event to get fired takes around 60s according to #20634 (comment). Potential solutions:

  • See if it's possible to use resolveEnvironment to quickly resolve the latest details for such envs. (either the same API or a new parameter on the same API)
  • Provide a private API to forcibly just refresh conda envs, so we need not do a full refresh.
  • Add a watcher for conda envs without python.
  • Investigate why the refresh for envs takes 60s and possibly prioritize refresh of conda envs over others.

This is my quick hack which was very very effective
In the resolve api

  • check of this cpnda env without python
  • Then check if python file now exists (the executable is predictable, currently it’s the id)
  • If all true, then get the new python env details

… envs without python (#20862)

Closes #20765

Change `resolveEnvironment` API to validate cache for conda envs without
python before using it, it also making sure we fire a update event after
resolving it and adding it to cache.

Fix should be out in the pre-release version of the extension in a few minutes, use the following to try it out:

image

Went with the first approach listed in #20765 (comment), resolveEnvironment API should return the latest details.

Verification steps:

  • Create conda env without python:
conda create -n testempty
  • Open a Python file to activate the Python extension
  • Open Python: Select Interpreter and wait for refresh to finish
  • Select the env created which should be at the bottom of the list with ⚠️ icon
  • You will notice Installing Python into environment... text in the status bar, wait for it to finish
  • Open Python: Select Interpreter and ensure the list contains the latest details for the env and no longer appears at the end of the list

Tried the following steps and the env which was created stayed at the bottom the second time I opened the Python: Selected Interpreter command and only disappeared after I reloaded the vscode window. Additionally, it takes a bit for the select interpreter command to finish. I have all the correct interpreter paths but it continues to load for likely a minute after that even though it doesn't gather any new information.

Sorry you also need to wait for Installing Python into environment... to finish after selecting the env in step 4, did you do that?

`node` already works this way. it is just browser extension that started
`pylance` inside `activate` directly.

Make sure we delay start pylance server (microsoft/vscode-python#20910)

fixes microsoft/vscode-python#20909

Activating `pylance` extension inside of `python` extension cause a dead

`pylance` once `python` extension is activated.

`node` already works this way. it is just browser extension that started
`pylance` inside `activate` directly.

since we want to keep using the same extension id and etc for our
telemetry, we need the reporter created from core ext.
