- Variants and optional dependencies are almost done.
- YAML configuration files are almost done.
- Once this is done profiles will be possible, and I can make compiler flags less tedious.

need ability not just to set compiler flags, but to add compiler flags.

need a way to encode what the thread flags are for particular compilers
- need a way to enforce consistency (don't link intel +threads with gcc +threads)
- common compiler variant names?
