Japanese layout on Latin baseline system

Yamamoto-san explained the history and the current status.

In the Western typography world, the concept of a body rectangle has become less defined since the decline of metal type. Currently, the most solid reference point in Western scripts is the baseline. In digital layouts, the origin point where Y=0 is designated as the baseline, and aligning the baseline to Y=0 in font design has become the standard.

In Japanese typography, the body rectangle is extremely important. To align Japanese characters within a baseline system, the Y=0 position is established within the full-width square of each character. Initially, this Y=0 position varied from font to font. When Adobe extended PostScript to Japanese, they set the bottom edge of the full-width body to -120. Adobe’s fonts adhere to this value. However, this value was chosen more for compatibility and interoperability than for any ideal design; fundamentally, it depends on the design itself. Although 90% of fonts on the market follow this value, some manufacturers set the bottom edge of the body to something other than -120. Additionally, if the full-width bottom edge is fixed at -120, the optimal baseline for Latin letters in that font may not align with Y=0. For this reason, a few fonts exist that do not align Latin characters to Y=0.

This fixed value is used in simple layout systems. Ideally, however, the relative position between the Japanese glyph body and the Western baseline should be adjusted per typeface. These values are already embedded within fonts, specifically in the OS/2 sTypoAscender and Base tables.

Yamamoto-san further explained that when Japanese characters of different sizes or fonts are laid out, they are aligned at the center by default. Additionally, depending on layout features, they may be aligned at the top or bottom (or left and right for vertical writing). Therefore, it can be considered that Japanese layout effectively has three baselines: one at the center and the other two at the top and bottom.

This knowledge will be reflected to the section 3.2 "Japanese layout model on Latin baseline system".

Document licensing terms

Shimono-san explained that the Document licensing agreement has been updated. JLReq TF members agreed to change the licensing terms of documents it manages.

ラテンベースラインシステムでの日本語組版

山本さんが歴史と現状について説明しました。

欧文の世界では活字がなくなって以降、ボディーの矩形の概念が希薄になった。現在、欧文での一番確固たる参照位置はベースライン。デジタルのレイアウトではY=0となる原点の位置がベースラインと決められており、フォントのデザインにおけるベースラインをY=0に揃えるのが原則。

日本語ではボディの矩形が非常に重要。日本語文字のボディーをベースラインのシステムで配置するために、全角正方形の中のY=0の位置を決める。このY=0の位置が最初はフォントごとにバラバラだった。AdobeがPostScriptを日本語に拡張した時に-120に全角の底辺を置くと決めた。Adobeのフォントはこの値を守っている。ただし、この値は理想でなく、あくまでも互換性や相互運用性から揃えるのが無難だったというだけ。本質的にはデザインに依存する。市場の九割のフォントはこの値に従っているが、ボディの底辺を-120以外にしているメーカーもある。また全角の底辺を-120に固定的に合わせようとするとそのフォントに含まれるラテン文字の最適なベースラインがY=0にならないケースが出てくる。そのため欧文をY=0に置かないものも数が少ないがある。

簡易なレイアウトでは、この固定的な値が使われるが、本来は和字のボディ位置と、欧文ベースラインの相対位置を書体ごとに変えるべき。既にフォントの中に値がある。OS/2 sTypoAscenderとBaseテーブルにある。

山本さんはさらに、日本語の異なるサイズやフォントの文字をレイアウトする際、デフォルトでは中央で揃えられることを説明しました。また、レイアウトによっては、上端や下端（縦書きの場合は左右）で揃えられる場合もあります。そのため、日本語のレイアウトには実質的に3つのベースラインがあると考えられます。1つは中央、他の2つは上端と下端です。

この知見は、第3.2節「ラテンベースラインシステムでの日本語組版モデル」に反映される予定です。

ドキュメントのライセンス条件

下農さんが、ドキュメントのライセンス契約が更新されたことを説明しました。JLReq TFメンバーは、管理しているドキュメントのライセンス条件を変更することに合意しました。
