maybe a new Guide?

E.g. I can't run SELECT SUM(MEAN(value)) FROM foo... but I can do a CQ to calculate MEAN(value) FROM foo into bar, and then SELECT SUM(value) FROM bar

Update influxdata/influxdb#52 when docs are live (feature request for subqueries, which can be largely worked around using chained CQs)
