Hi
What value do you have for "default_vsz_limit" in your conf file ? If you
double it, do you have the same issue ?
It was at the default on this server, but I changed it to 2G in the
morning, before I submitted the report.
I also updated fts-xapian to the latest version in the morning.
I have just checked my logs and I see the errors were still there:

Ever since I did the last git pull; make clean; make install and restarted
dovecot, there has been NO crash.
That was yesterday at 15:38hrs (EAT).
My very last crash was => Apr 05 *14:56:17*
imap(elias.njiru@crownkenya.com)<65925><KSbVKMeF8pOaTCHQ>:
Fatal: master: service(imap): child 65925 killed with signal 6 (core dumped)
It therefore seems like you nailed the cause of the problem (or no?) :-)

let's wait a few more days to call victory

Okay :-)
I was going to wait a few days before I undo the config changes that
facilitated the obtaining of the coredumps.... So we review this on
Wednesday.
BTW: why does plugin { fts_autoindex = yes } eat so much system
resources (CPU, RAM)? I had to disable it from my plugins config because it
almost brought my system down.

fts_autoindex eat so much ram *at first run* because it needs to index all
existing mailboxes on your server.
My strong suggestion is to keep this on, maybe start putting it at late
evening when your users will least experience problems so it will create
the index of their mailbox then after this first work is done, ram/cpu
usage is extremely low and users will have a very smooth experience

2G.
I can't double it since my server has only 4GB RAM. Unless you tell me that
it doesn't matter.

What value do you have for "default_vsz_limit" in your conf file ? If you
double it, do you have the same issue ?

2GB shall be far enough. Probably even 1GB is enough. How many users do you have ? |
I have 380 users on this server.
I have enabled the fts_autoindex hoping it will finish running over the
weekend.

with 380 users, you may consider upgrading your server ;)
very cheap server with 48 or 64 GB or RAM are available on

The thing is that not many of these users use IMAP. Very few use webmail,
even.
They are mostly on POP3. Very few do IMAP so I don't expect loads on this
server originating from people actually doing searches.
I will upgrade the RAM to maybe 16GB if the management allows.

if very few use IMAP, then you are right, no need of upgrade.
