What does an enhmstratigraphy record represent?

A record in the stratigraphy module represents a unit of time in the geologic time scale or strata in the rock record, or a cultural period of time. This is used to document 1) the geologic age of a specimen or artifact, 2) its position in the rock column 3) and correlate it with other specimens or artifacts.

Record Types:

Chronostratigraphy:

  • A chronostrat record refers to the absolute age or geologic time. The primary unit is a geologic period.

Lithostratigraphy:

  • A lithostrat record refers to variation in rock composition (lithology) as a way to map and order rock units. The primary unit is a formation.

Biostratigraphy:

  • Also refered to as paleontologic stratigraphy refers to fossils and evolution as a way to date and order rock units. The primary unit is a zone.

Chronometric Age:

  • A chronometric age record uses the fields on the Absolute Date tab to document the chronometric age determined for a cultural object (or part of an object) using a method such as Dendrochronology.

Sequence:

  • A Sequence record refers to deals with linking sedimentary rock units using unconformities as boundaries between genetically related sedimentary packages. The primary unit is a cycle.

Cultural:

  • A cultural strat record uses human artifacts as a way to date and order rock units. The primary unit is a an age or period

Record Structure:

Flat; There are no attachments to other enhmstratigraphy records.
