The Zoul module
The Zoul is a core module developed by Zolertia to target most Internet of Things (IoT) applications and products, providing a flexible and affordable module solution to integrate to most existing products and solutions, or ease the prototyping and production of new products in a short time.
The Zoul is based on TI's CC2538 system on chip (SoC), featuring an ARM Cortex-M3 with 512KB flash, 32Kb RAM, double RF interface, and the following goodies:
- ISM 2.4-GHz IEEE 802.15.4 & Zigbee compliant.
- ISM 868-, 915-, 920-, 950-MHz ISM/SRD Band.
- AES-128/256, SHA2 Hardware Encryption Engine.
- ECC-128/256, RSA Hardware Acceleration Engine for Secure Key Exchange.
- Small form-factor of 16.78 x 30.89 mm.
- Prototype friendly, to fit on most prototyping boards (breadboard, etc.).
- Self-contained and EMI-protected module under a shield.
- The Zoul will be CE/FCC certified (2016) to allow a fast integration and short time to market for new products and solutions.
The Zoul module is actively used in Industrial and consumer projects, ranging from lighting control systems to monitoring applications in Agriculture, Smart Cities and Health Care. To ease the research, developing and prototyping of your own applications, we have developed the following hardware platforms depending on your scope:
The RE-Mote is an ultra-low power complete hardware development platform, packing years of experience and insight from academic and industry partners, developed to be easy to use, flexible to fit most Internet of Things applications, and complete as it packs essential features, such as a battery charger (to be used with solar panels and alike energy harvesting options), RTCC (Real Time Clock Calendar), Micro SD and more.
The RE-Mote doesn't require any external programming tools, just connect an USB cable and start developing!

The Firefly is an out-of-the-box Zoul implementation, packing only the essentials (RGB LEDs, buttons, programming over USB) to allow a down-to-core development, providing more available pins and peripherals for your application.
The Firefly form factor allows to be used with breadboards, and fit most PCB designs. The 831-928MHz printed PCB antenna allows operation without an external antenna, but the Firefly also provides 2 U.Fl connectors for cases external 2.4GHz and Sub-1GHz antennas are required.

The RE-Mote platform (current Revision A) has been successfully ported to the following Operative Systems:
A current OpenWSN port is currently under work.
The Zoul documentation is available in this GitHub repository. The information shown below is taken from the Zoul repository.

Libraries are available to import the Zoul as a component in the following CAD programs:
A design reference is available both in the Datasheet (BOM, schematics, PCB) and also online.
A guide showing how to import The Zoul in Fritzing as a component is available here.
