Overview

The project's primary objective is to aid students at the University of Queensland (UQ) in locating and engaging in group sports activities. It will use real-time location tracking to provide users with live information on where sports activities are happening and where potential participants are.

Key Features

Real-time Location Tracking

① Utilize GPS or similar technologies to track users’ location in real time. This feature allows students to see who is available nearby for sports activities.
② Incorporate privacy settings to ensure students can be visible or invisible on the platform.

Venue Information

① Provide detailed information on sports venues, including the type of sports that can be played, equipment availability, size, capacity, and more.
② Integrate with UQ’s facility booking system, if available, to provide information on venue availability.
③ Allow users to book a venue directly from the platform.

User Profiles

① Allow students to create profiles showcasing their interests, skill levels, preferred sports, and availability schedules.
② Matchmaking features that pair students with similar interests and skill levels.

Event Creation & Joining

① Allow users to create sports events, specifying the sport, venue, time, required number of participants, and other details.
② Notify nearby users of newly created events or those looking for additional players.
③ Provide a platform for users to join open events or request to join private ones.

Communication Tools

① Integrated chat feature for participants to communicate before, during, and after the activity.
② Push notifications for updates, reminders, and invitations.

Rating & Feedback

① Enable users to rate venues based on their experience.
② Allow participants to rate each other, fostering a respectful community environment.

Safety Features

① In-app emergency buttons or features that notify campus security or local authorities.
② Features to report and block users exhibiting inappropriate behaviour.

Potential Challenges

① Privacy Concerns: Sharing real-time location data can be a privacy concern. The platform should have robust privacy settings and transparent data-handling policies.
② Accuracy: Ensuring the accuracy of real-time location data and venue availability can be challenging.
③ User Engagement: Encouraging students to participate actively and regularly update their availability or location.
④ Safety: With real-time location sharing, there are concerns about stalking or unwanted attention. The platform should prioritise user safety.

Potential Benefits

① Community Building: The platform can help foster a strong sports community within UQ.
② Increased Physical Activity: By making it easier to find and participate in sports, students may be encouraged to be more physically active.
③ Optimized Use of Resources: Resources like sports fields or courts can be used more efficiently by providing real-time information on venue availability.

Stakeholders

① UQ Students: The platform’s Primary users are those seeking sports activities and those organising them.
② UQ Administration: They can support the platform, provide necessary permissions for integration, and benefit from the optimised use of their sports facilities.
③ Sports Venues & Facility Managers: Stakeholders responsible for the upkeep and scheduling of sports venues.
