This PR builds on #735 and extends it to ArraySchema and ArraySchemaEvolution. Fairly extensive tests have been added.
An illustration of the new features is also in this file which shadows some of the added unit tests.
(The branch was also rebased to the change for the now-released 2.25.0 so some timestamps below are newer / some tests are missing.)
