Timetravelersatlas is a web application that allows users to explore historical events and places on a map, and generate AI-generated text descriptions of those events and places. The app is built with React and Mapbox, and uses the OpenAI API for text generation.
To get started with Timetravelersatlas, clone the project repository and install dependencies using npm install.
git clone https://github.com/your-username/timetravelersatlas.git
cd timetravelersatlas
npm install
Then, create a .env file in the root of the project directory with the following environment variables:
REACT_APP_MAPBOX_ACCESS_TOKEN=your_mapbox_access_token_here
npm start
Once the development server is running, you can access the Timetravelersatlas app in your web browser at http://localhost:3000.
To use the app, enter a location in the search bar and click "Go" to center the map on that location. Then, use the year slider to select a year, and click "Generate" to generate an AI-generated text description of historical events and places in that location during that year.
Note that Timetravelersatlas requires an OpenAI API key to function.
Timetravelersatlas is a work in progress and currently requires significant improvements in UX design. Some areas for improvement include:
Better integration with Mapbox, including support for the globe mode and more reliable behavior when using the "Go" and "Generate" buttons
A loading icon or other feedback during the text generation process to improve user experience and provide feedback that the app is working
Improved visual design to make the app more engaging and intuitive for users
