Unexpected Error when trying to set up RS485 connection #100

Hello. I've fiddled for quite a while to setup this integration via RS485.
I have a SUN2000-8KTL-M1. Connected the RS data to 1 and 3 on the serial connector. The RS485 dongle is a OKY3406-6.

I keep getting the Unexpected Error when trying to set up.

I've checked 20 times and I don't seem to be doing anything wrong. I tried also swapping the cable terminals and then I get after about 20 seconds of trying the setup: "Reading from the inverter failed.".

I suppose the correct polarity for the wiring is the one where I get "Unexpected Error" immediately.

After frenetically just pushing Submit to create the integration I got a message "Created configuration for SUN2000-8KTL-M101074300-002". However nothing seems to work

Can you increase logging by adding the following to your configuration.yaml:

logger:
  logs:
    pymodbus: debug # only include this if you're having connectivity issues
    huawei_solar: debug
    homeassistant.components.huawei_solar: debug

Restart HA and please post extracts from the full logs, not from the summary that you're quoting now. I hope to get some more detailed error messages, including line numbers that will help me diagnose the issue.

Also, please remove any configuration that you have for the huawei_solar integration in that file: it is not used by my integration (but was used by Emilv2).

Do you have a battery attached to your inverter?
Did you have it working via the network before?

I had indeed some old configuration entries for Emilv2's integration which I now removed. However the issue persists. Let me know try to get the detailed logs as per your request.

Did you also include the pymodbus: debug line? I'm not seeing any log lines from that library appearing in the logs...

What type of cable did you use to connect the pins to the USB-adapter? Does it run along other cabling?
I'm having a gut-feeling that a lot of garbled messages are showing up: the errors from your first post show things happening that never should occur, but could indicate all sorts of bit-flipping happening along the way.

I am using an SFTP cable, (shielded, twisted pair and using a pair) which does indeed run alongside the DC wires from the solar panels but it's only for 3-4 meters. Honestly being DC cabling, and mt cable being shielded I never thought that could be an issue. Should I try another cable or another routing? The entire length of the cable from the inverter to the USB stick is 6 meters maybe.

Should I try another USB to RS485 converter?

You can just drag-and-drop the .txt file into the reply field to upload it. I would expect more output from pymodbus to be available than what you show in the screenshot.

Are you using a pair of wires that is twisted together in your SFTP cable to connect them?

Before going out and buying new hardware, I would just test your current adapter by plugging it into your laptop and using software like QModbus to verify that you can read some registers.

Some combinations to try:

register 30000, length 15
register 40000, length 2
register 43006, length 1

Hello, sorry I was on holidays.

I did go out and buy another RS485 to usb device but it is still not working, the behaviour is the same. It is a twisted pair that I’m using but anyway the cable is like 5m long so I do not expect that this would be a big issue. Tried different pairs as well. Just won’t work. I’ve run out of ideas on what to try!

The good news is that I managed to get it to work via TCP after finding an Android phone and updating the Sdongle Firmware.

The question is now whether I am losing any functionality via Modbus TCP as opposed to RS485. My interest is to be able to remotely set the maximum power of the inverter.

I forgot to also mention that I do not have a battery and the TCP integration didn't work, but I assumed that's because I was running the dongle on SPC119 which wasn't supposed to work and I decided to opt for the RS485 connection for being more stable and recommended also by you.

Possibly if I upgrade the firmware of the dongle the Modbus TCP might work.

Just one question about pins used. Have you confirmed that you should use 1 and 3 in your inverter? I do not have an M1 so it may be different but my L1 requires to use pins 1 and 2 for the modbus client and 3 - 4 for meter and batteries

The comm plug is completely different than the L1 version and it seems that 1-3 and 2-6 should be both valid (IMO I am far from an expert here).
