Posters
Need to make a poster for a conference? The Voytek Lab and UCSD have resources that can help.
- Broadly, use a top to bottom / left to right ordering
- Avoid words, pictures & graphs are better
- Use section headings (titles) to tell the story (titles are results)
- The main focus (the main result / main idea) of the poster of should be in the middle
- Don't overcrowd things - leave some space for things to 'breathe'
The Voytek Lab has several pre-made templates for constructing posters. These templates can be found in the repository or on the Voytek Lab Google Drive in "posters >> templates". The following formats are available:
- Adobe Illustrator (.ai)
- Encapsulated PostScript (.eps)
- Pages (.pages)
- Portable Document Format (.pdf)
- Scalable Vector Graphics (.svg)
It's recommended that you convert your poster to PDF for printing.
UC San Diego offers cheap and pretty quick poster printing on campus through UCSD Imprints. Poster jobs can be submitted online or delivered in person. Printing locations include the Triton Print location in Gilman Parking Structure or in Bldg. A of the Campus Services Complex. The Gilman location offers 1-hour high quality poster printing and is highly recommended. In general, try to submit poster requests at least 48 hours in advance.
- For figures on the poster, use .pdf or .svg formats as .jpg and .png formats lose quality when printed in large formats.
- On your personal computer, make a poster with the desired dimensions (either length or width must be 36" or 42") and save as PDF.
- Submit a job through UCSD Imprints. Be sure to verify that dimensions are correct before submitting the order. Alternatively you can call UCSD Imprints (858) 534 - 3020 or email the PDF to tritonprint@ucsd.edu.
