This document describes required and optional metadata for contributing images, maps, texts, and other digitized objects to ULS Digital Collections, Historic Pittsburgh, and Documenting Pitt. The Digital Collections metadata application profile is based on the MODS standard (Metadata Object Description Schema) maintained by The Library of Congress. MODS is a schema for a bibliographic element set that may be used for a variety of purposes, and particularly for library applications. It is based on MARC, so it should be familiar to those experienced with library cataloging. For an overview of metadata in general, please see our document "What Is Metadata?"
