Talk on remote working #126
Comments
Hi @scottyab , Thanks for offering to speak! I'm guessing you might not have come along before, in which case the next TMU is on February 8th and that might give you an idea of how things tend to run and maybe a chance to meet in person. Anyway, we have space from April (12th) onwards, would April, May (10th) or June (14th) suit? Hope this helps, let me know if you have any questions and I'll see what I can do! |
Hi @scottyab , are you still interested in talking? We still have space in May or June if you are! |
Hey @marksutherland sorry for the radio silence both work, family and conferences have been pulling at my time. I haven't been before but heard good recommendations from few people I know in Edinburgh who are regulars. I'm keen to talk but hadn't realised it's only Wednesday's you do. It's a difficult day for me childcarewise and I've used up my goodwill with conferences this part of the year. Maybe we could look at something in September if that works? that'll also let me book cheap flights from Bristol. |
Don't worry about it :) September would be on the 13th (it's always on the second wednesday of the month). We usually have a live stream and we have past recordings available on our youtube channel if you're interested in seeing how things normally go: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWMSLoZh4U4Pgc8n8ylw8Pg |
Hi @scottyab ! Just realised I totally dropped the ball on this. Any chance you're still interested in talking in the coming months? |
Hey @marksutherland me too. As I mentioned I hadn't realised it's only Wednesday's this is my busiest day specifically with childcare commitments in afternoon/evening. So it's probably best to postpone the talk until further notice. I would really like to come talk if I find a few wednesday or you experiment with different days of the week. Cheers, Scott |
Hi Scott,
No problem, I have a toddler of my own and know what it's like. We're
pretty much set on the second Wednesday of each month at this point, so if
you happen to find yourself free, let us know!
Thanks for offering! Look forward to hearing from you :)
Mark

Hi, I'd be interested to come give a talk on remote working. Previous speaking experience is listed on my blog’s speaker timeline. Mia Alexiou recommended this meetup to me. let me know if this is of interest.
Abstract:
Attaining a work life balance can be difficult when you’re chained to a desk, no matter how tasty the free coffee/lunches are. It’s hardly their fault, it’s in a commercial company’s DNA to work you as much as possible. Can switching to working remotely solve the issue? You can save time on the commute and spend more time with family! It must be a no brainer?
But working from home or being remote isn’t a silver bullet, there are plenty of challenges! Communicating, collaborating and isolation to name just as few. I’ve spent the last 4 years working remotely for companies based in USA, UK and Europe. Also what are the additional security and hardware considerations of being remote? This talk shares some of the experiences, tips and tricks that I’ve learnt along the way.
