Here we provide you with the necessary information of the PROBA2 mission, in particular the Sun Watcher using Active Pixel System detector and Image Processing (SWAP) instrument for the use of our Instrument-to-Instrument (ITI) translation tool.

PROBA2

The PROBA (PRoject for Onboard Autonomy) mission is an ESA microsatellite launched in November 2009. Its objective is to study the evolution of events that can affect space weather, such as coronal mass ejections, EUV waves, solar flares, and EUV dimmings. It is equipped with 4 scientific instruments, with the two main instruments SWAP and the Large Yield RAdiometer, formerly LYman alpha RAdiometer (Lyra). This allows simultaneous event studies using imaging (SWAP) and irradiance measurements (LYRA). PROBA2 was originally planned for two years until October 2011. With the extension of the mission PROBA2 provides a large and valuable dataset for steady Sun monitoring.

Instruments

  • LYRA: Large Yield RAdiometer)
  • SWAP: Sun Watcher using Active Pixel System detector and Image Processing)
  • TPMU: Thermal Plasma Measurement Unit)
  • DSLP: Dual Segmented Langmuir Probe)

SWAP

The SWAP instrument is a small EUV imager that captures observations in the solar corona in the wavelength bandpass at 174 Å. With a field of view (FOV) of 54 arcmin, SWAP provides wide-field observations for the large-scale evolution of the solar corona. The cadence varies, with one image captured in the range of 1-2 minutes.

SWAP Data products

  • Level 0: raw image data with a resolution of 1024x1024
  • Level 1: calibrated images (science data)
