rustdoc: set panic output before starting compiler thread pool #52181

When the compiler was updated to run on a thread pool, rustdoc's processing of compiler/doctest stderr/stdout was moved into each compiler thread. However, this caused output of the test to be lost if the test failed at runtime instead of compile time. This change sets up the set_panic call and output bomb before starting the compiler thread pool, so that the Drop call that writes back to the test's stdout happens after the test runs, not just after it compiles.

Fixes #51162

r? @rust-lang/rustdoc

Also nominating for beta backport because the linked issue in the OP is on beta.

EDIT: Also, i'm not sure how this can be properly tested. The rustdoc-ui tests don't pick this up, since the libtest output doesn't go through a diagnostic handler.

bors=me with CI done

EDIT: And please add a test. You can have one with rustdoc-ui.

While this new arrangement delays the printing of the collected output to a later, more appropriate stage, doesn't this still leave the panic handler eating more data, if there is any? Should the panic handler also be restored? (Or maybe it's otherwise guaranteed to exit before that can happen? Sorry, not familiar with the code here.)

My assumption is that because this is what it was doing beforehand, it's not much harm to leave it. Before I had this version, I tried calling set_panic to switch the sink back in this Drop call. It didn't change anything about the output, so I set it back. Each test will set the panic writer to a fresh buffer, so there's no chance of test outputs accumulating.

However, if any panic occurs outside of this function, the output will be swallowed. This may be what we want, but it's something to consider.

@GuillaumeGomez I can't test this in rustdoc-ui - the libtest output doesn't use a diagnostic handler, so the UI tests don't see the output. I made a test with no stderr file, and the test passed because it didn't spit out any json error output.

I think you can configure the output in order to be checked as is. We can't let this without a test. If needed, add a new option into the tester.

Turns out, there is a compiletest flag, disable-ui-testing-normalization, that lets you test the raw output. I've turned the sample i used while diagnosing this issue into a UI test and pushed it.

@QuietMisdreavus You should also return the compile_result variable with (libdir, outdir) and then do the matching outside the thread pool so the panics there gets captured.

I'm not really sure what's up with the test error? The UI test is complaining that the .stdout file doesn't use $DIR. Does this have to do with the disable-ui-testing-normalization flag? The test works locally (in fact, the .stdout file was made with the --bless flag...)

You should also return the compile_result variable with (libdir, outdir) and then do the matching outside the thread pool so the panics there gets captured.

@Zoxc Is that really necessary, though? It looks like it works anyway:

$ cat e.rs
/// This is a function
///
/// ```
/// no
/// ```
pub fn foo() {}

#[cfg(test)]
#[test]
fn bar() { panic!("the disco"); }

$ rustdoc +local --test e.rs

test e.rs - foo (line 3) ... FAILED

@Zoxc Is that really necessary, though?

With [rust] experimental-parallel-queries = true in config.toml, the closure passed to driver::spawn_thread_pool will run on a separate thread, so the set_panic call won't apply there.

@QuietMisdreavus
Copy link

@Zoxc That's unfortunate. I moved those panics outside the thread pool, and added a test which makes sure that doctest compile failures also properly appear. I set parallel queries up on my local fork and made sure it worked.

I also had to manually apply one kind of normalization to the test stdout file. This makes it work on travis, but because those files were made automatically, will that cause any problems with people running them locally? The test doesn't pass locally any more.

I hope you don't mind me butting in, but I was really curious about the path issue. The stdout file should use $DIR paths. The reason it fails locally is because (I think?) the builds in travis execute x.py (and thus compiletest) in a directory outside of the source tree. This causes rustdoc/libtest to display absolute paths in the test results instead of relative paths. The path given to compiletest via --src-base is absolute, so on travis everything is fine. However, when run in a dev environment the absolute path given in --src-base doesn't match the relative paths in the test output, so it is unable to normalize the output and compare it.

Offhand I'm not sure of a good way to fix that. It's a little late for me, so I can't keep looking right now, but hopefully that gives you some ideas where to look. In particular, contrary to the comments, these two values are normally absolute paths (based on --src-base). I'm not sure of a good way to normalize the paths when they depend on where compiletest is run.

@ehuss I think the root of the problem is that i'm disabling all UI test output normalization so i can run the test in the first place, but some flag that travis is running (path remapping?) is causing it to output $DIR, or at least use that for its comparison. I'm tempted to add a manual normalization option to replace the path, but that seems like it could backfire.

some flag that travis is running

It's not a different flag, exactly. It's just running from a separate directory (see here). If you cd /tmp (somewhere away from your source tree) and copy and paste and run the compiletest command, it should pass locally.

@QuietMisdreavus
Copy link

Aha, now i see it! Turns out, there's a bad interaction between how rustdoc prints paths in its output, and how compiletest normalizes paths:

let parent_dir = self.testpaths.file.parent().unwrap();
let cflags = self.props.compile_flags.join(" ");
let json = cflags.contains("--error-format json")
|| cflags.contains("--error-format pretty-json")
|| cflags.contains("--error-format=json")
|| cflags.contains("--error-format=pretty-json");
let parent_dir_str = if json {
parent_dir.display().to_string().replace("\\", "\\\\")
} else {
parent_dir.display().to_string()
};
let mut normalized = output.replace(&parent_dir_str, "$DIR");

Since that only runs the replace on the full path, it doesn't hit the partial path that occurs when you're in a parent folder of the file in question.

A quick scan of the repo tells me that one existing test uses the disable-ui-testing-normalization flag: src/test/ui/ui-testing-optout.rs. That test uses $DIR in its .stderr file, but that test also properly uses --error-format json - the rustdoc test added here is testing the output of the test runner, which doesn't see this flag. (It can accept a version of this flag, but i feel like fully testing the output of the test runner involves creating an entirely new compiletest mode.)

I also went back and double-checked the test i added, and removing disable-ui-testing-normalization doesn't even seem to affect it? I must have been missing something else earlier. (This makes sense, since that flag seems to only suppress sending -Z ui-testing to rustc/rustdoc, which i'm not sure rustdoc even processes.)

Possible solutions i can think of offhand:

  • Add a custom normalization to the test, normalize-stdout-test: "src/test/rustdoc-ui/failed-doctest-output.rs" -> "$DIR", since i imagine a common situation will be either running the test from the repo root (where x.py is) or from outside the tree entirely (where travis is running it).
  • Make compiletest also replace suffixes of the file path when normalizing to $DIR.
  • Have some means of making rustdoc use full path names for its test names and output? This may also require forcing rustc to do the same for its human-mode compile errors, since those come straight from the compiler.

Does macOS name threads differently? Doctest executions are run in threads that (on linux) are named after the doctest they appear in. It looks like the threads are all named rustc here, though.

Ping, 1.28 release is approaching (next week).

I think i see how the thread naming is happening. When specifying a doctest, rustdoc gives libtest a closure that calls in_rustc_thread, which then calls the test:

rust/src/librustdoc/test.rs

Lines 561 to 582 in a1e6bcb

rustc_driver::in_rustc_thread(move || with_globals(move || {
io::set_panic(panic);
io::set_print(print);
hygiene::set_default_edition(edition);
run_test(&test,
&cratename,
&filename,
line,
cfgs,
libs,
cg,
externs,
should_panic,
no_run,
as_test_harness,
compile_fail,
error_codes,
&opts,
maybe_sysroot,
linker,
edition)
}))

in_rustc_thread sometimes spawns a new thread, and sets the thread name to rustc:

if spawn_thread || env::var_os("RUST_MIN_STACK").is_some() {
let mut cfg = thread::Builder::new().name("rustc".to_string());

If it doesn't spawn a new thread, it's because it was able to set the current thread's stack size earlier in the function. This works on Linux because it's able to call getrlimit/setrlimit to do this, and on Windows because it's able to set this at link time. However, it seems on macOS (at least on this travis Mac builder) that these rlimit calls fail, and the new thread is spawned, overriding the name of the thread. This causes the doctest failure to print "rustc" rather than the name of the test, e.g. "src/test/rustdoc-ui/failed-doctest-output.rs - SomeStruct (line 16)".

...now i need to figure out how to fix it. >_>

Okay, i was able to get that last commit to work locally (forcing the thread to spawn on linux by setting the RUST_MIN_STACK environment variable), but the real test is whether it will still work on travis's macOS builder.

rustdoc: set panic output before starting compiler thread pool

When the compiler was updated to run on a thread pool, rustdoc's processing of compiler/doctest stderr/stdout was moved into each compiler thread. However, this caused output of the test to be lost if the test failed at *runtime* instead of compile time. This change sets up the `set_panic` call and output bomb before starting the compiler thread pool, so that the `Drop` call that writes back to the test's stdout happens after the test runs, not just after it compiles.
