This bug has already been identified but I wanted to open an issue for it.

The following code should print I've been dropped first. (playground)

Should temporaries be dropped before the else block?

I think they should, since this would be consistent with if/else. (playground)

Lower let-else in MIR

This MR will switch to lower let-else statements in MIR building instead.

To lower let-else in MIR, we build a mini-switch two branches. One branch leads to the matching case, and the other leads to the `else` block. This arrangement will allow temporary lifetime analysis running as-is so that the temporaries are properly extended according to the same rule applied to regular `let` statements.

I believe the two tests in test_borrow shall be comparing to 0. The reason is that let _x = &(<expr>).0; actually extends the temporary <expr> to the end of the block at the moment, which is the desired outcome.

@dingxiangfei2009 good point. What's important is that both the let-else and let-else free version are doing the same thing. Maybe one can add an additional block around the let _x = ... assert_eq!(...); and then add a second assert_eq to ensure it dropped after the block terminated?

Also note that when I wrote that test I didn't know about compiletest storing/checking the stdout of run-pass tests, so maybe you can simplify it a little by removing the thread local variable as well as the code that manages it, and instead printing to stdout at important places (and adding println!("Visited line {}", line!()) to a few places). Edit: nvm, it's not possible as the .stdout files are for compiler output, not runtime output of the tests.

It might also be an idea to add a test for the inconsistency between if and if let: https://hackmd.io/@nikomatsakis/r1CpZqc8c#Side-note (no matter which side of the divide let else is on, make sure that there is no breakage of it in the future)

So I was rebasing #99291 onto latest master and I wanted to share this as part of the diff:

There has been great improvement by #99518 but it was no full fix, especially this still post-drops:

@est31 I think this is because the borrowed Droppy::B is assigned with extended lifetime. #99518 only breaks out towards the remainder scope. It turns out this is not sufficient. I will try to break out to further one scope up, say the parent remainder scope of the current one. I feel that this should suffice.

This is correct behavior I think. Anything accessible in the pattern needs to be in scope till the end of the block. Consider you can write let x @ &Droppy(_) = . It shouldn't depend on whether the pattern matches since that is not known at compile time generally.

@camsteffen yeah it may not be dropped before the code after the let else construct terminates, but it can be dropped before the else block.

### Differences from the RFC / Desugaring

Outside of desugaring I'm not aware of any differences between the implementation and the RFC. The chosen desugaring has been changed from the RFC's [original](https://rust-lang.github.io/rfcs/3137-let-else.html#reference-level-explanations). You can read a detailed discussion of the implementation history of it in `@cormacrelf` 's [summary](rust-lang#93628 (comment)) in this thread, as well as the [followup](rust-lang#93628 (comment)). Since that followup, further changes have happened to the desugaring, in rust-lang#98574, rust-lang#99518, rust-lang#99954. The later changes were mostly about the drop order: On match, temporaries drop in the same order as they would for a `let` declaration. On mismatch, temporaries drop before the `else` block.

### Possible future work / Refutable destructuring assignments

[RFC 2909](https://rust-lang.github.io/rfcs/2909-destructuring-assignment.html) specifies destructuring assignment, allowing statements like `FooBar { a, b, c } = foo();`.
As it was stabilized, destructuring assignment only allows *irrefutable* patterns, which before the advent of `let else` were the only patterns that `let` supported.
So the combination of `let else` and destructuring assignments gives reason to think about extensions of the destructuring assignments feature that allow refutable patterns, discussed in rust-lang#93995.

A naive mapping of `let else` to destructuring assignments in the form of `Some(v) = foo() else { ... };` might not be the ideal way. `let else` needs a diverging `else` clause as it introduces new bindings, while assignments have a default behaviour to fall back to if the pattern does not match, in the form of not performing the assignment. Thus, there is no good case to require divergence, or even an `else` clause at all, beyond the need for having *some* introducer syntax so that it is clear to readers that the assignment is not a given (enums and structs look similar). There are better candidates for introducer syntax however than an empty `else {}` clause, like `maybe` which could be added as a keyword on an edition boundary:

### Possible future work / Refutable destructuring assignments

[RFC 2909](https://rust-lang.github.io/rfcs/2909-destructuring-assignment.html) specifies destructuring assignment, allowing statements like `FooBar { a, b, c } = foo();`.
As it was stabilized, destructuring assignment only allows *irrefutable* patterns, which before the advent of `let else` were the only patterns that `let` supported.
So the combination of `let else` and destructuring assignments gives reason to think about extensions of the destructuring assignments feature that allow refutable patterns, discussed in rust-lang#93995.

A naive mapping of `let else` to destructuring assignments in the form of `Some(v) = foo() else { ... };` might not be the ideal way. `let else` needs a diverging `else` clause as it introduces new bindings, while assignments have a default behaviour to fall back to if the pattern does not match, in the form of not performing the assignment. Thus, there is no good case to require divergence, or even an `else` clause at all, beyond the need for having *some* introducer syntax so that it is clear to readers that the assignment is not a given (enums and structs look similar). There are better candidates for introducer syntax however than an empty `else {}` clause, like `maybe` which could be added as a keyword on an edition boundary:

Further design discussion is left to an RFC, or the linked issue.
