The sidebarwidth option does not change the width of the sidebar.

I might be wrong but it sounds like a legacy parameter that was set to mimick the classic theme from sphinx: https://www.sphinx-doc.org/en/master/usage/theming.html.

A quick search in the code shows that the only reference to this parameter lies in the theme.conf file: https://github.com/search?q=repo%3Apydata%2Fpydata-sphinx-theme%20sidebarwidth&type=code.
