Trying out a new design: single monolithic Wasm module that is the entire state-transition function/"runtime", everything compiled into that.

Object indexes are removed entirely; code and top-level design is substantially simplified by getting rid of the notion of independent modules at the state-transition level. General modularity/safety shouldn't be an issue since we'll have the language mechanisms of Rust to fall back on there.

Except for the initial execute_block call (and any "test" calls that are made during construction of a block such as execute_transaction) then there is no dispatching on the native side. Once in wasm, all dispatch happens "internally", cutting down on dispatch complexity and increasing efficiency. It does mean that transaction execution requires a dispatch table, but given the relatively small number of transactions and the fact we will need some sort of special-case dispatch to ensure deserialisation anyway, increased complexity should be minimal.

There is no need for Address (H160) type in the native code at all. Storage is a simple (Merklised) [u8] -> [u8] mapping. Code is no longer stored separately - the entire blob is placed in storage (at key \0code) - it exists, and can be updated, only as a single blob.

Validators are also in storage, with the number of validators in a BE, minimally-sized format (exactly as in RLP) at \0validator_count. Individual validator identities are stored, indexed, at \0validator<INDEX> where <INDEX> is the index encoded as before.

Yet to be done:

  • Provide injected externalities into Wasm
  • Provide injected allocator in Wasm
  • Allow dispatch of variable sized bytes parameters (execute_block, in particular)
  • Sort out variable sized bytes parameter return
  • Remove StaticExternalities distinction (unneeded now)
  • Make storage available to runtime
  • Make code available to runtime
  • Introduce validator set and make available to runtime.
  • Fix tests.
  • Reconsider returning Vec<u8> from Externalities
  • Introduce latching for code and validators (replacement only happens after block execution) and avoid initial copy

@gavofyork gavofyork added the A3-in_progress Pull request is in progress. No review needed at this stage. label Dec 5, 2017
let flat_trie = storage.iter().map(|(k, v)| (k.to_vec(), v.clone())).collect();
(addr.to_vec(), sec_trie_root(flat_trie).to_vec())
(unsafe { transmute::<u64, [u8; 8]>(object.to_be()) }.to_vec(), sec_trie_root(flat_trie).to_vec())

to get this straight: there is a single piece of code which represents the entire state transition function?

How do we make sure that transactions are running in a sandboxed context?

we get to dispatch them, so essentially we only execute the functions that we want them to be execute (i.e. the safe ones).

but the memory will be shared, right? No sandboxed context? Some leaking pointer can then accidentally corrupt the whole block validation.
Another question: how will we handle panic/exception? it will abort the entire context? i.e transaction execution could abort the whole block validation.

If there's a bug in the wasm code this is possible, but this won't be a consensus issue because the whole execution is still sandboxed. So the impact is pretty much the same as any other coding bug.

transaction execution could indeed correctly abort block execution. any block which aborts, for any reason, is considered invalid. naturally, any transaction which causes its block to abort would render that block invalid (and the relay-chain collator would be rather foolish to include it).

- Add util functions/macros.
- Add uncompacted runtime.
- Add some external crates from pwasm-std for managing allocs/memory
stuff.

A couple of binary files from runtime/target/wasm32-unknown-unknown/release/ got included in the PR

yeah i included the binary files since the tests won't work without them and not everyone might have the full wasm32-unknown-unknown x-compiling environment on their machine. you can install the environment with the handy script i made runtime/init.sh, but i guess windows users can't use it.

(i also haven't had time to look into automating the x-compilation of the runtime as a dependency of the rest of polkadot. for now there's runtime/build.sh which must be run manually.)

this is a little unhygienic. could we use $crate::alloc?

Also, is there a guarantee that input data is heap-allocated and can really be freed?

yes - that's given by the other side which (as might be imagined) calls the heap allocator.

using \0 as a path separator partly to avoid collisions with separators within user-readable strings and partly to avoid collisions with all C-style strings.

Event arguments in the metadata are treated as `Vec` instead of
`HashSet`. This fixes an issue with event arguments of the same name.

For example the `Balances::Transfer` event has four arguments:
`AccountId` (from), `AccountId` (to), `Balance` (value), `Balance`
(fee). Before this change the code would only try to parse the two
distinct arguments `AccountId` and `Balance` and decoding would fail.
