Add a new host function for reporting fatal errors; make WASM backtraces readable when printing out errors #10741
Add a new host function for reporting fatal errors; make WASM backtraces readable when printing out errors #10741

Can't immediately think of a use-case. Perhaps can be followed up? |
In general since the backtraces are serialized into a string the same way as they were before (that is:
So,
Indeed that's how it looked like to me in the code. (: I was just curious whether it is something that would be actually useful to us and we'd want it sooner rather than later, or would it be just a nice thing to have but we don't really care that much right now? (If it's the former I suppose I could add the support myself to
Yeah, that was more of a "if anyone thinks it's needed I can add it, but otherwise I'll leave it as-is for now". |
Okay, so this was a huge pain, but I went through the whole codebase and everywhere an Before:
After:
From my point of view this should be good to go, pending any further review issues or CI issues. If we want to also have filenames + line numbers in the backtrace that could be done with e.g. something like I described in my previous comment, although if we'd go for that I'd suggest to follow up in another PR. |
Forgive me my ignorance, but can you confirm that these changes do not allow new instances of non-atomic state changes? So whenever processing an extrinsic had a side-effect on the state, it is still either fully done or no effect is done? |
AFAIK that's how it works, and this PR doesn't change anything in this regard. |

Besides some nitpicks it looks really good! :)

Yeah, I would directly make the declaration return the never type.

is not stabilized though and there is no canonical never type in the stdlib. What type would you use? Declare a new one? TBH does not seem to be worth the effort to me.

This looks good. As always nits are not necessary to fix in this PR and can be followed-up.
A word on the naming though. I must say I am not really happy with: fatal error either. In hindsight maybe "panic" is not that bad: maybe it is tolerable that it is taken from Rust, maybe it's time to admit we are rust-first ) Moreover, IIUC, Go uses the same term.
This all are just thoughts: by no means the naming blocks this PR.

Nit: Please leave a comment on this feature. E.g. what it does, who could use it and why.
Hahaha! Then I would go with panic :P |
Okay, I changed it back to "panic". (: I've addressed all of your comments; should be good to go once the tests pass unless there's anything else you'd like me to change. |
I think the only think would be to create a ticket in Polkadot to enable this feature in like 2-3 versions. IMO we can then also remove the feature entirely. |

Why not call it abort
? The host interface isn't concerned with the fact that a panic happened, in fact it shouldn't even concerned with the fact that the runtime is written in Rust.

Hm, well, we can still change it. I don't really have a strong opinion either way and don't really want to get into bikeshedding the name, so I'm fine with whatever's the consensus.

This changes the handling of optional dependencies. We currently have features that enable optional dependencies when `std` is enabled. This was before no problem, but now the wasm-builder detects them as enabled. To support the transition period until 1.60 is released as stable, this pr adds an heuristic to not enable these optional crates in the wasm build when they are enabled in the `std` feature. This heuristic fails when someones enables these optional dependencies from the outside as well as via the `std` feature, however we hope that no one is doing this at the moment. This PR adds a new host function for reporting fatal errors (for situations when the runtime either panics or runs out of memory) which are then passed through the executor, instead of being only printed out in the logs.
Issue: #10585
Previous attempt: #7954
A few notes regarding the implementation:
I've tried to avoid the Rust-specific term "panic" when picking a name for it, instead opting for "fatal error". Naming is hard though, so if anyone has a better suggestion I'm all ears. (:Changed back to "panic".Error
enum - one for normal WASM traps (AbortedDueToTrap
), and one specifically for traps triggered through this host function (AbortedDueToFatalError
AbortedDueToPanic
). I've also removed thewasmi
-specificError::Trap
, and now traps for both backends result in the sameError
variant.wasmi
doesn't seem to support gathering backtraces though, so underwasmi
it's always empty.wasmtime
to serialize the backtrace into aString
for us, since doing that manually is not totally trivial. It can be considered a little hacky, but it works.primitives/application-crypto
crate depends on the thesp-io
crate without thestd
feature, however it is not compiled for thewasm32-unknown-unknown
target. This is problematic since the WASM-only interface which I've added callscore::arch::wasm32::unreachable()
, which is available only on WASM targets, so this breaksapplication-crypto
's compilation. Not sure if there's a better way to handle it, but I've just made the#[runtime_interface(wasm_only)]
actually be WASM-only by gating it with#[cfg(target_arch = "wasm32")]
.Future work/open questions:
wasmi
too?wasmi
, to make sure they're consistent between both backends.)String
blob?wasmi
still has its ownError::Wasmi
variant which we could get rid of)
