Use Keyboard Manager to extend keys to type diacritic characters #7677
Comments
Can you please change the isdue title to this: |
I type in multiple languages at the same time. I used to use the MS Keyboard Layout Editor to modify my keyboard layouts to add new characters to the US English layouts of my physical keyboard, but this is now no longer available for download. The use case is e.g. to be able to type something like č š which is not on the keyboard layout for US English without changing input language. So this is not remapping a character to some other key combination, but typing out a character not assigned in the current keyboard layout |
I have used the Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator 1.4, but the new Windows 10 settings will not recognize the customized keyboard that easily. It will not be on the list of keyboards. One has to display the Language Bar from old Windows 7 and then select it there (and you have to make sure that there is only the customized keyboard, and not any of the Language Settings keyboard in Windows 10. So for example, after you add the customized keyboard, Windows will select the next keyboard listed (I have Greek in order to do DuoLingo courses) and then use the Language Bar to selected the new Customized US English keyboard. Then Windows 10 will show the US English keyboard as active/selected/in use. |
Thanks for that. This is a bit off topic, but the MSKLC is no longer offered for download from MS. In any case, some sort of replacement of that functionality through Power Toys would be fantastic. |
I had to download the MSKLC from another site (made sure my anti-virus scanned the file once downloaded. Actually, I do not think this is off topic. When I read that these new PowerToys would include Keyboard Manager, I thought this particular feature of that we are asking to be implemented would already be there. |
This is something similar to "Wincompose"? |
I just went to the WinCompose page, and I can see it might provide what we are looking for, but we do not want to have to have so many combinations. It would be easier to just click the Alt-Gr key and type a key and be done with the character. In my particular need, if it understands the combination of a + o to create ꜵ, it would be helpful with I want to do it by clicking just two keys and not three. |
Yes of course, also wincompose has it's own plethora of issues, the developer forces you on the usage of a lot of combinations that are completely useless on Windows, such as the emojis, I asked for something similar before (see #6684 ) |
You want diacritics, some mathematician might want those characters that they enter frequently in their formulas, and some other person might want to enter the same emojis that they can enter in their mobile phone. All of them are a specific subset of the list of Unicode characters. So why implementing a partial solution, when the complete solution would be supporting the entry of any Unicode Character? |

📝Use Keyboard Manager to extend keys to type diacritic characters
What is the expected behavior of the proposed feature? What is the scenario this would be used?
I was hoping this KBM would allow me to do the following: Type the character ꜵ (U+a735) when I used VK_X, ShiftState 'Ctl+Alt' and the character Ꜵ (U+a734) entry for VK_X, ShiftState 'Shift+Ctl+Alt' and Caps on.
Looking forward for this feature to be included in order to map my diacritic @characters.
