Let's use a more descriptive name - e.g. "Inspect Kubernetes node with crictl".

This document is for users, not "runtime developers".

It helps users inspect and debug container runtime and applications on a Kubernetes node.

crictl provides a CLI for CRI-compatible container runtimes. This allows the CRI runtime developers to debug their runtime without needing to set up Kubernetes components.

crictl is GA since v1.11.0 and is hosted at the [cri-tools](https://github.com/kubernetes-incubator/cri-tools) repository. We encourage the CRI developers to report bugs or help extend the coverage by adding more functionalities.

I just pushed a copyedit commit. PTAL @feiskyer and all, and ensure that I kept all of the technical details intact. You can preview the content at https://deploy-preview-8880--kubernetes-io-vnext-staging.netlify.com/docs/tasks/debug-application-cluster/crictl/.

Some of the things I did:

  • Lots of rewording
  • Use the Task template
  • Remove the specific info about the subcommands and flags that can be discovered from the crictl help output so that it doesn't drift from reality as flags and subcommands get added and modified
  • Clean up code examples to adhere to the style guide

If you want the detailed command-line reference contents back, I believe you should add them to a new file in /content/en/docs/reference/command-line-tools-reference/. Maybe @steveperry-53 can provide guidance here as I think he knows more about these files than I do.

I have one pending question about how you configure your image registry so that crictl works, or what prerequisites exist for that. Are there actually more prerequisites than I have listed? I placed a TODO in this part of the file.

@feiskyer @mistyhacks Most of the the docs/files in /content/en/docs/reference/command-line-tools-reference/ are generated from strings in code files, and thus contain exactly the same content as the CLI help. If you want this kind of reference doc, it makes more sense to generate it than to maintain it manually. As Misty says, there's a high risk of drift.

I recommend taking Misty's edits for 1.11, including removing the information about subcommands and flags, and considering for 1.12 whether you want to generate docs. We have a couple of different models to work from. If you want to discuss generating docs further, please bring it up as a proposal to sig-docs. Thanks!

@mistyhacks No other special prerequisites except let container runtime running. Have you encountered any issues with this?

## Usage
In order to use `crictl`, you need access to a Linux system that is not a
running Kubernetes cluster.

crictl could be running with Kubernetes cluster. It can help for troubleshooting runtime issues.

The only limitation is that: if you create a container with crictl directly, the container will be stopped and removed by kubelet.

```sh
crictl SUBCOMMAND [FLAGS]
```
For `crictl` to be able to pull images, you need TODO THIS IS NOT CLEAR TO ME

No special requirements, just crictl pull <image> should work (of course CRI runtime should be running).

Introduce a separate section about CoreDNS.

* Copyedits, fix headings for customizing DNS

Hey Lubomir,
I coypedited pretty heavily because this workflow is so much easier for docs and because I'm trying to help improve everything touching kubeadm as much as possible.

But there's one outstanding issue wrt headings and intro content: you can't add a heading 1 to a topic to do what you wanted to do. The page title in the front matter is rendered as a heading 1 and everything else has to start at heading 2. (We still need to doc this better in the docs contributing content, I know.)

Instead, I think we need to rewrite the top-of-page intro content to explain better the relationship between kube-dns and CoreDNS. I'm happy to write something, but I thought I'd push this commit first so you can see what I'm doing.

Hope it's all clear -- ping here or on Slack with any questions ~ Jennifer
