The logic to decide how the abs and nan functions are implemented based on the signedness of val_type should be more robust now and will prevent the compiler warning. It also removes the macro parameters that were used until now!
Let us just used the underlying Kokkos function for max().

Fixing warning being generated on IBM Power9
The warning comes from the current handling of char type that can be either signed or unsigned depending on the platform.
The new implementation uses enable_if to detect if numeric_limits::is_signed is set to true or false and an appropriate implementation of abs() and nan() is selected.
