single-gpu-passthrough

These notes are specifically for my setup:

  • Arch Linux
  • GRUB2
  • Intel Core i9-12900KF
  • EVGA NVIDIA RTX 2080Ti (vBIOS: 90.02.30.00.98)
  • Samsung 870 EVO Plus
  • Intel X710 10Gb SFP+ (exposed with macvtap)

If your hardware or linux distribution differs, you will likely need to adjust some of these steps and/or configurations.

Enabling IOMMU support in the kernel

Add the following two kernel command-line parameters by editing GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT in /etc/default/grub

  • intel_iommu=on
  • iommu=pt
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="loglevel=3 intel_iommu=on iommu=pt"

Generate a new grub configuration file with these changes.

Reboot and confirm IOMMU is enabled and functioning.

In my configuration the GPU, SSD and audio device fall into the following IOMMU groups:

Configure the VFIO Kernel Module

Create /etc/modprobe.d/vfio.conf and add the device identifiers to bind to.

⚠️ You must bind all of the deviecs within the IOMMU group, even devices you do not want to passthrough to a guest.

Install QEMU, Libvirt, etc.

# sudo pacman -S qemu-desktop libvirt edk2-ovmf dnsmasq dmidecode iptables-nft swtpm
# sudo systemctl enable libvirtd --now

You may also optionally install virt-manager, a GUI frontend.

# sudo pacman -S virt-manager

Install Libvirtd QEMU Hook

  1. Edit the qemu hook to reflect the name of your guest, by default it's configured for "win11".

  2. Copy the libvirtd qemu hook into the correct location

Make sure you restart libvirtd when adding/removing hooks.

# sudo mkdir -p /etc/libvirt/hooks
# sudo cp -v ./qemu /etc/libvirt/hooks
# sudo chmod u+x /etc/libvirt/hooks/qemu
# sudo systemctl restart libvirtd

Edit GPU vBIOS

With my setup this section is no longer necessary, I will leave this step here for informational purposes.

  1. Obtain a dump of your GPU's vBIOS.

This can be done by extracting it from the card directly via a utility such as nvflash, or downloading the image from the internet.

  1. Open the vBIOS image with a hex editor and locate a string starting with 0x55 (U) containing VIDEO, it may look similar to U.w.K7400.L.w.VIDEO
  2. Delete all bytes preceeding the 0x55 (U) byte in the image. (around 160Kbytes should be removed)
  3. Save a modified copy in /usr/share/qemu

For the sake of this document, the full path will be assumed as /usr/share/qemu/gpu-passthrough.rom

Creating and Running the Guest

Virtual Machine (VM) creation is covered in several other guides. I'll call out some "gotchas" and recommendations.

  1. The edited GPU vBIOS needs to be passed through to the guest on the VGA controller.

With my setup this section is no longer necessary, I will leave this step here for informational purposes.
