FTR you can also change the default tag format in the repo:
<plugin>
<groupId>org.apache.maven.plugins</groupId>
<artifactId>maven-release-plugin</artifactId>
<configuration combine.children="append">
<tagNameFormat>@{project.version}</tagNameFormat>
</configuration>
</plugin>
