Show road colours

It would be useful to show colours associated with roads; for example http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:ref:colour and http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:colour

Perhaps the road signs can show the colour instead of the roads themselves, that way the colour used to symbolize road-type is preserved.

This might create to much visual clutter. On the other hand, it might make it easier for people to navigate. I have no strong opinion, what do others think?

From a practical point of view, we can't use colours from the database until mapnik expressions-everywhere is supported (mapnik 3+). But in any case, I don't like the idea of handling over colour choices to highway departments.

If anyone fancies giving it a go when mapnik supports it, then I'd be interested to see the results, but it's not something to tackle here.
