Summary

Adds a free-text section to the ECS field reference docs for each fieldset, called usage. The usage directory will allow for any current ECS fieldset to have a paired usage document which will appear as a subsection in the ECS docs table of contents.

Format/Appearance

The ECS documentation book will add an additional level of chunking:

Screen Shot 2020-09-30 at 1 21 20 PM

This additional, nested documentation page will only be added when a usage document is created for that particular field set.

Implementation Notes

  • A new directory named docs/usage is being added and includes a README.md describing the intent and how-to for the usage asciidoc files.
  • The asciidoc_fields generator will check the contents of docs/usage and create the necessary include statements in docs/field-details.asciidoc.
  • No usage documentation is included; this PR focuses on putting the framework in place. Changes to docs/field-details.asciidoc were done to align with the changes in the field_details.j2 template.
  • The field details Jinja2 template has added the [discrete] section attribute to allow the necessary include statement to work as expected.
  • The Makefile has been updated to use the higher chunking level: --chunk=2

Relates to #943

Looking great!

Two small adjustments and we can merge :-) One is captured as a comment below.

The other thing I would add is a quick mention in schemas/README.md that links to the new docs/usage/README.md.

The `base` field set contains all fields which are at the root of the events. These fields are common across all types of events.

discrete is equivalent to float, correct? That's what I think I understand from the asciidoctor docs.

No need to change this, btw. If they're indeed equivalent, I actually prefer the word "discrete" over "float".

Yes the two seem to function the same.

I came across a bullet point in the AsciiDoctor docs mentioning preference of [discrete] over [float] here, as well as the Elastic doc's chunking guidance suggesting [discrete] too.

Thanks for the review @webmat!

In addition to your feedback, I have at least two items to address prior to merging:

  • Add logic in the Jinja template which auto adds a link to usage from the field details page.
  • Open a PR to the docs repo changing our chunking level from 1 to 2 in the doc build configuration.

On the second point, does this mean we need to split the work from this PR in two?

  1. PR that adds all the new [discrete] markers (but just that)
  2. set chunking to 2 in docs repo
  3. Finish up with PR

Yes, that's a great point! 😅

I'll work on getting the [discrete] PR opened, and queue up the changes for the docs PR in parallel.

Once the separate PR for [discrete] has been merged, I'll come back and tidy up this branch's commits.

* [1.x] Move _meta section back inside mappings, in legacy templates. (elastic#1186) (elastic#1187)

Backports the following commits to 1.x:

* Move _meta section back inside mappings, in legacy templates. (elastic#1186)

This fixes an issue introduced by elastic#1156, discovered in elastic#1180. Composable templates support `_meta` at the template's root, but legacy templates don't. So we're just putting it back inside the mappings for legacy templates.

This also fixes missing updates to the component template, after the introduction of wildcard in elastic#1098.
