Have any plan for support new Python/Pylance extension?

I had test that theia(blueprint) only can support the ms-python.python-2020.10.332292344 extension, now vscode have build this to python-2022.20.0/vscode-pylance-2022.12.21.

If I install higher that ms-python.python-2020.10.332292344, like 2021.8.1159798656, the 'run' button will disappear, do not show.

Hi @ouliuquan,

unfortunately, Microsoft isn't playing nice with the rest of the open source community, which is why their new Pylance extension is closed source (the repo only contains the releases, not the source). Even further, their license states that only officially distributed Microsoft applications are allowed to use the extension, and so any Theia application using that extension is in violation of that license. With that in mind, we don't have any plans or the ability to support the Pylance extension.

Regarding the older ms-python.python extension: Have you confirmed that the button is also there in vscode? Are there any errors in the log when starting the extension? There might be quite a few explanations on why the button doesn't show up/the extension doesn't work as expected.

Hi @msujew , after I checked the startup log, I found that this plugin will resolve to a new version Pylance. Except for version ms-python.python-2020.10.332292344, even ms-python.python-2021.8.1159798656 later requires Pylance. Maybe we really have no way to support it(ms-python.python with Pylance). So the 'run' button disappear, too.
