I took this in a slightly different direction. CITATION.cff is a more generalized and more common citation data format. The related tool, cffconvert can make other citation file formats if they are needed.

I am conflicted about including the version number and commit ID in the CITATION.cff. These might turn into maintenance issues in the release process. The commit ID might be impossible to maintain with our current release process
