remove extra newlines

This removes the extra newlines that are currently present in emitted messages from the StreamHandler and exceptions that get emitted.

So I'm not sure which commit was causing the extra newlines (possibly 39a7927), but this commit causes FileHandler output to have NO newlines at all, which is even more inconvenient.
