One is king general other one jewel general. The one with dot (jewel) is used by lower ranked player, challenger, etc. tsumeshogi problems and some apps use both jewel generals to not put one player above the other, and therefore make them equals in eyes of Japanese custom. If you want to show respect to your shogi teacher, offer them to take the king general before you set up pieces/start game.

As far as I see, there is already the King General and the Jewel General on Lishogi. What exactly do you want to ask in your open issue?

My ask is that Lishogi offer functionality equivalent to 81Dojo (that the less honorific player receives the jewel general).

So, how exactly should that look like on Lishogi? The higher-rated player gets the King General and the lower-rated player gets the Jewel General?

I'm guessing:

  • BOT/computer player (if any) would get the jewel general, else
  • Titled player would get the king general, else
  • Player with established (non-provisional) rating would get the king general, else
  • Higher-rated player would get the king general, else
  • If both players have the same rating, both would get the king general

before the 1580s both players had a 玉将

Who is the titled player from the point of Lishogi?

... What is not so clear to me is the apparent association of gyokushou/玉将 with sente.
This association is consistently depicted in the two icons/buttons that are tapped/clicked to select either sente/☗/玉 or gote/☖/王。

(Q1) Is it a universal shogi convention that sente plays with the gyokushou/玉将 king-piece or is this merely a convenient convention adopted for lishogi?

For me the ambiguity arises from the translation of 玉将 as "junior player or challenger" in contrast to 王将 as "senior player or reigning player or defender".

Since the choice of which player makes the first move (sente) is traditionally made using furigoma/振り駒、
(Q2) is it the universal practice that the player winning that five pawn toss also selects the king-piece marked 玉将?

I suppose you could say that I am currently confused as to whether the 玉/王 primarily distinguishes
(i) sente from gote OR
(ii) junior from senior.

Thank you for your comments that clarify which convention is local to lishogi players/kishi/棋士 and which is global across the shogi world/kikai/棋界。
