SCANNING

  • When you start a new flight, determine from the spread sheet the next flight to scan
  • Contact Ann to have her check if all prints are in house, or if prints are missing because they're checked out to patrons.
  • If prints are checked out, move to next flight on the spread sheet, and repeat.
  • To prepare for scanning, clean scan bed as usual and check software settings
  • Remember to close the lid to the ENDUST container with the cleaning wipes!
  • 600 dpi, INPUT as well as OUTPUTsetting 16-bit (=48) color, Adobe RGB 1998
  • File name consists of year, flight symbol(s), and number of the individual print. Connect sets of letters or numbers with dashes, but use underscores between letters and numbers. To check the spreadsheet find link under "Pages"
  • Please use brush to clean the original, power blower to clean scan bed between scans
  • Leave space around the print. Please do use the white paper as background, but no need for the gray scale
  • If the preview looks too light with washed out highlights expand white area around the image and start new preview.
  • Saving the scan, double-check that the file name you've assigned matches the number on the image.
  • Check focus of the finished scan
  • When re-sleeving, please avoid print sticking out of the sleeve if possible. It's ok when the sleeve is open at the bottom as static/friction seems sufficient for the print to stay in place and not drop out.

PROCESSING

  • Look at the actual prints for reference. Compare the accession numbers marked on the original aerial print to the file name, make sure they match. Also, make sure all the prints that are supposed to be in the physical folder are actually there by checking against what the the label on the folder says.
  • Use Bridge to open file in Photoshop.
  • Straighten and crop to the image without leaving a border
  • Desaturate, Sharpen Edges, create Adjustment Layer/Curves
  • Expand white background to check if crop is clean, and as reference for adjustments
  • Improve contrast in Curves
  • If the highlights look washed out, you can mute them by pulling down the very top of the curve from the the right corner. Also, try to keep details in the dark areas.
