Write unit tests (and possibly an integration test) for mdb.

  • add tests for most of the main source code (80%)
  • add tests to CI
  • fail CI if coverage is below threshold (currently 60%)
  • update README.md and CONTRIBUTING.md
  • add section to docs explaining tests
