If I pass in user/password via env vars and not function arguments I get following error:

Error in if (getOption("google.user") != "") usr <- getOption("google.user") : 
  argument is of length zero

Because getOption evals to NULL and NULL!="" evals to logical(0)
I have fixed this in my branch.
