Ideas for the future

  • As a mellow intro to assess everyone’s interests/skills, I would recommend we do the first half of the Flag Loop Trail. Counter-clockwise, starting at Lake Mary and JW Powell — out to Campbell Mesa and back. Or we can turn back sooner.
  • I would suggest a 3-5 hour ride, near the campus. Maybe to the top of Fisher point? Any other suggestions? If you want to do something shorter I could recommend a nice loop on observatory mesa, which takes about 1 hour solo, probly 2 hours max in a bigger group.
  • Autumn colors bike ride / hike in Aspen Grove?

Sat Sept 26, noon-4pm BBQ at Lake Ashurst

Dear colleagues,

The SICCS Connections Committee would like to invite you to a kid-friendly afternoon outdoor BBQ and optional overnight camping trip at nearby Ashurst Lake.

Where: BBQ in Ashurst Lake day use parking lot, camping 1-2 miles down the road in the nearby forest. There are three loops with many FREE dispersed camping spots to choose from (plenty of space to socially distance, but NOT a campground so NO picnic tables NOR toilets, bring your own portable toilet or shovel to dig a hole).

When: BBQ Noon-2PM with a lunch about in the middle of that, on Saturday 26 September. Toby will get there earlier to setup around 10AM so feel free to come earlier if you like; I’m sure many will want to stay and enjoy the lake for awhile after lunch. Those who want to camp overnight will be leaving at around 4PM to drive to a camping spot in the forest.

Directions: take Lake Mary Road for 17 miles south past lower/upper Lake Mary, then turn left at the sign for Ashurst Lake, follow dirt road 82E (accessible to any/all vehicles) for 4 miles straight ahead until you get to the lake, then turn right, drive through the campground and we will be in the day use parking lot just after the campground. Google says it is 38 minutes but you should plan for about 1 hour because you should drive SLOW (max 10-15 mph) on the dirt roads. Google map to campground (you need to keep driving past the campground to the next parking lot which is our meeting point): https://www.google.com/maps/dir/School+of+Informatics,+Computing+%26+Cyber+Systems+%E2%80%94+NAU,+Knoles+Drive,+Flagstaff,+AZ/lake+ashurst+flagstaff/@35.100109,-111.6770161,11z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x872d8f6420e5d047:0x5b860a3da3b34b74!2m2!1d-111.6584294!2d35.1861602!1m5!1m1!1s0x872dea6dbd07ec33:0xcc683045f703bd6b!2m2!1d-111.40727!2d35.02103!3e0 There is typically no cell phone service in the forest so please bring a map (https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/coconino/landmanagement/projects/?cid=stelprdb5356224#mvum) or write down the directions.

What to bring: Camping/lawn chair, food for your party, plenty of water, and any other drinks you like. For the BBQ Toby will bring a gas grill and camping stove, so you can cook on those, or bring your own cooking gear. The BBQ area is right on the lake so you may also want to bring a bathing suit and your watercraft (kayak, canoe, inflatables). The fishing report https://fishingreports.sportsmans.com/fishing-report/ashurst-lake/19348/ is excellent if you are so inclined! For the overnight camping in the forest (NOT near the lake), bring all your camping gear (tent, sleeping bags, air matress, warm clothes, etc) as well as food/water for dinner/breakfast.

Sunday Sept 13, 2pm, Mountain Biking on Campbell Mesa

The connections committee would like to invite you on a friendly mountain bike ride with colleagues! This is the first edition of the “SICCS Adventure Series” — the idea is to do something a “bit more challenging” (without kids) to allow interested SICCS folks to learn more about the awesome area we live in. (sharing local knowledge between folks who have lived here a while, and newer folks)

Meeting Date/Time: Sun Sept 13, 2PM on your bike at Campbell Mesa trailhead. https://www.google.com/maps/place/Campbell+Mesa+Loop+Trails/@35.2013284,-111.5733372,15z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x4353b17ace4c811e!8m2!3d35.1997153!4d-111.563059

Route: There are several very easy flat loops out there, we can do them all in about an hour or so. We will decide which route to take on the spot based on how people are feeling:

  • Campbell Mesa Loop ~5 miles
  • Walnut Meadows ~4 miles
  • Continental Loop ~2 miles

Unofficial meeting time/place: 1pm at Powell/LakeMary, then we ride to Campbell Mesa.
