It would be nice to have alternatives to the current "windows" view.
I can think of two new views :

  • a "tab" view where each open window would be a full screen tab
  • a "tile" view where each open window would be tiled and remain movable and resizable (for example, you may want to have the song editor at the top of the screen 1/3, and the remaining 2/3 of the screen having the piano roll below).

We're pretty much limited to the capabilities of Qt here, so I'm not
sure how feasible these are to implement (at least without making major
changes to the way the UI works). Some kind of window snapping
functionality would be nice though.

The "tab view" is already sort of possible, you just maximize every view
and then switch between them with the buttons in the left side of the
main toolbar. Many people actually use LMMS this way.

Indeed I have no idea about the actual difficulty that would represent.
I was just thinking about it looking at the toolbar on the left which already have tabs, that you can hide/unhide and that has a big handlebar for resizing. I was thinking about generalizing that effective principle to LMMS as whole.

should we close this one in favour of #1911 because that one's more descriptive?

Better to consolidate, as we all agreed to move to that direction
