First install Elixir:
brew update
brew install elixir
To start your Phoenix app:
- Install dependencies with
mix deps.get
- Create and migrate your database with
mix ecto.create && mix ecto.migrate
- Install npm dependencies with
npm install
- Start Phoenix endpoint with
mix phoenix.server
Now you can visit localhost:4000
from your browser.

The only setup is that you need to install two buildpacks:
heroku buildpacks:add heroku/nodejs
heroku buildpacks:add heroku/heroku-buildpack-elixir
phantomjs --wd
mix test

$ mix ecto.create
run the commands
CREATE ROLE postgres LOGIN CREATEDB;
ALTER ROLE postgres LOGIN;
ALTER ROLE postgres CREATEDB;
