How to modify a partial (layout file) with the new go mod system?

Previously I could just override a file by copying it from the theme directly into web site's layout folder and modify the contetnts there. I tried doing the same with the current version, but got:
Error calling partial: "...\starter-hugo-academic\layouts\partials\site_footer.html:3:5": execute of template failed at <partial "functions/get_hook" (dict "hook" "footer-start" "context" .)>: partial "functions/get_hook" not found

The method of overriding a layout file did work for me however for layouts/partials/widgets/about.html though.

Nothing has changed! You still override a file by placing a local version on the same path as the remote file you want to overwrite.

@chrede88 Well something is happening with some of the partials. If you try putting site_footer for example into your local version, the site won't compile complaining about missing functions (functions/get_hook)

Does the version of the file correspond to the version you are using to build your site? I.e. the version in your go.mod vs the version of the footer on GitHub.

@chrede88 Thank you, that was it! I took the partial file from the wrong commit (not the same commit starter-academic template was referring to).

As @chrede88 suggested, I was using the wrong version of this partial file (there have been incompatible changes to it since the last update of wowchemy-academic starter).
