how to adjust max-width of a post

my knowledge of coding beyond R is very limited so I am having trouble adjusting the max-width of my blog posts. I tried creating a folder "assets/scss" with a file "custom.scss". this is what I tried but it didnt work:

.body {
max-width: 1200px;
}

im sure this is very trivial. can someone advise me how to properly do this.

Better try playing with this (especially max-width):

.article-container {
  max-width: 760px;
  padding: 0 20px 0 20px;
  margin: 0 auto 0 auto;
}
