Unable to edit homepage #1869

Hi! I am trying to customize my website [https://muditkumarsingh.netlify.app/] following [https://wowchemy.com/docs/page-builder/] and was able to make some changes but I am unable to introduce myself on my home page. I have edited the content/authors/admin/_index.md but the default biography and user details are not getting replaced!!

I am editing the files on my GitHub repository [https://github.com/r4work/starter-academic/tree/master/config].
Looking for expert advice.

Sorry, it's my first attempt to build a website. I tried for hours and things did not seem working so I started trying other ways out by cleaning the repository. But any idea what could be the possible reason? Shall I redo the steps (deploying a website with netlify, editing the contents again, and update if the problem persists. I wonder if anyone else is facing a similar problem with the starter-academic theme?

In principle if you update this file the contents should update as well. Try to repeat the steps and share the repo to see if we can help you better.

Well, it now seems working with a fresh website (https://muditsingh.netlify.app/)! I straightway edited the file contents and it accepted the changes. I might have messed with some file configurations. Any idea of how can I get my old website name (muditkumarsingh.netfly.app)?

Strangely, the same trouble is back. I have edited the [content/authors/admin/_index.md] file in my newly-created default public repository by Netlify [https://github.com/r4work/starter-academic]; it worked well yesterday at the time of deployment of my website [https://muditsingh.netlify.app/]. But it is again not reflecting any further edits in the / _index.md file on my homepage today. Please advise.

The error implies that line 55 of your content/authors/admin/_index.md is invalid YAML - around this line, you have [ icon: cv which is invalid YAML. Perhaps you meant to type - icon: cv? You can learn about YAML syntax here: https://learnxinyminutes.com/docs/yaml/ .

Another question, I see a huge blank space on my home page [https://muditsingh.netlify.app/] using my repository[https://github.com/r4work/starter-academic], so I want my skills right there below my education and interest fields. I disabled the skills widget and tried editing the [static/admin/config.yml] file with adding skills codes that I can't fully understand (line 69 to 85, just trying copy-pasting things from the other fields). My website deploy history in the netlify is also not throwing any error. So I can't really understand whats going on.
Can any expert suggest steps to do that?

@r4work for that you need to override the about.html partial adding code from the featurette.html partial. If you're still getting used to the theme I wouldn't recommend it as it's not as straightforward as it may seem. Perhaps @gcushen can shed more light

Sorry for poking around, I have compiled some questions for the experts to answer for the remaining sections of my website (https://muditsingh.netlify.app/) for the time being--
Project section--

How do I mention a link to my project
Also, I am unable to change the view (I tried changing the view to 1,2 or 5 in the project widget but nothing worked)
Publications section--
1.'publication' is linked to the 'featured' widget although there is another widget 'publication.md' that deals with recent and featured publications. I just want a single publication field with all my publications listed with their external links. How do I do that?

What do you mean with a link to my project? Your projects should go in a project folder. I don't see any in your repo.

This is probably because you're not seeing any project.

Publications section--

If you want, you can deactivate the featured widget by setting active = false in line 8 here.

Popular Topics--

Same as above, just set active = false in line 5 here.

For that you need to create different folders for each of the sections you want to have. Take a look at my repo here for inspiration.

I meant that there are external websites for my projects and I want the project names with their external links to appear on my home page when one clicks the project section on the top. Thankfully, with the expert suggestions, my website [https://muditsingh.netlify.app/] seems ok to begin with. I managed to make most of the desired changes. For now, I simply played around with widgets and it worked without creating any folder at this stage!
However, I am now facing trouble with the publication and following [https://wowchemy.com/docs/managing-content/]. I installed python version 3.8(64 bit) on my windows 7 yesterday. But I keep getting a syntax error message on the command prompt of python. Am I correctly following the wowchemy document or is it referring to some other command line?

I have never used Hugo Academic CLI so no idea where that error is coming from. For manual addition you shouldn't need the command prompt though, just follow the instructions here.

For manual addition, the document suggests using this command [hugo new --kind publication publication/]. I tried for hours to install Hugo, git on my windows (I am using windows 7 so had to install environment editor as well]. But I could not get anywhere and got puzzled. Looking at the @rodrigoalcarazdelaosa repository, following the tutorial pattern, I created [content/publication//_index.md] this file. But I am unable to link it to the publication option on my homepage. Seems, I am close but missing something that can connect with the 'publication' tab on my home page that is connected to the 'featured.md' widget.

Please suggest a remedy.
