The California Public Utility Commission (CPUC), is the sole regulatory agency for utility services in California which includes cellular data services. Today the CPUC uses standard network tools (traceroute) to collect information about mobile data networks. Data visualization is used to express and convey network information captured from mobile devices from all-over the state of California. However, the current data visualization technique does not include Internet Service Provider information. The lack of Internet Service Provider information makes understanding connectivity or response times by an individual Internet Service Provider difficult.
To meet the request for proposal by the CPUC this project takes the current state of CPUC network performance visualization and includes a new visualization which include Internet Service Providers (ISP). The addition of Internet Service providers within the data visualizations will help the CPUC and public better understand how mobile data networks perform and how the providers have routed data through their networks.
We will build a data visualization technique that includes Internet Service Provider information to meet the CPUC Request for Proposal requirements. The data visualization will include source and destination endpoints, ISP name where available, number of hops within a particular ISP and other Internet Service Providers between the source and destination if any. Our customer, State of California Public Utilities Commission, has asked us to build a tool by the end of the semester for the general public to visualize trace route data obtained using the CalSpeed application.
