Basic Server Requirements

For detailed server requirements, see: Omeka server requirements (Omeka.org).

Please note that at present, Curatescape is not compatible with hosted/paid omeka.net accounts. You need to use a server with FTP access to install the Omeka and Curatescape software.

Overview

To sum it up, what you need is known as a LAMP server (basically, any server with Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP). This is the industry standard so it will be the default choice for almost every commercial hosting provider. You'll need to ensure that ImageMagick is installed and accessible on your server.

The amount of storage needed depends on how big you imagine your project will be. To give a concrete example, a project with 300+ entries (each including multiple media files), might utilize about 20 GB of disk space. At about 10K page views per month, such a project would likely use no more than 50 GB of bandwidth per month. Most hosting providers will give you the option to add more storage or bandwidth later if you outgrow the defaults.

Choosing a host

Some hosting companies are definitely better than others when it comes to running Omeka. You can find a list of recommended hosts at omeka.org/codex/Hosting_Suggestions

While Curatescape does not endorse one company over another, we can tell you that we use Reclaim Hosting for many of our projects and have had a good experience. Sign up here: Reclaim Hosting.

Some users have reported that Network Solutions requires a comparatively more expensive VPS service in order to properly run Omeka. Thus, we do not recommend using Network Solutions for most use cases.
