That is a good find. In geographic spaces, we should always be doing this (even in MATLAB) @WPringle

Maybe if you have one, it would be helpful to show an example building a regional mesh in the polar or crossing a polar region. Drakes Passage might be a good location as it the adjacent shoreline is highly complex and can benefit from automatic mesh generation.
