For those who are upgrading to version 4.0 of Services from an earlier
version, there is a change you may need to be aware of regarding memos. As
of version 4.0, Services stores memo data in the nickname database, rather
than in a separate database as in previous versions. By default, the name
of the memo database in old versions of Services was "memo.db", but this
was configurable in the config.h file. If you chose a different name for
your memo database, then you MUST rename it to "memo.db" in order for
Services 4.0 to find it. Once you have Services 4.0 running, you may
delete this file.
Also be aware that the database files used by Services 4.0 are
incompatible with those used by previous versions of Services; while
Services 4.0 can read database files produced by older versions, once the
database files are written in the new format, there is no way for older
versions of Services to read them again. Therefore, it would be advisable
to back up your current database files before installing and running
Services 4.0, so that if something goes wrong you can revert to a previous
version.
Finally, Services 4.0 now stores all pseudo-client help messages
(along with other Services strings that are sent to users) in language
files to facilitate multi-language support; those help messages are no
longer found in the Services data directory, so there is no need to run
"make install-help", and you can delete the "nickserv", "chanserv",
"memoserv", and "operserv" directories from the data directory. Do note,
however, that you will need to recompile Services if you wish to change any
of the help texts. (This will hopefully be fixed in the future to keep the
files out of the executable.)
