Brief description of your issue

System Informer Crashes on Exit on Versions 3.1.24366 to 3.2.25036 on a Dell (released in 2010), Windows 10 Pro 32-bit, 4 Gigs of Ram. The error dialog says "(Not enough virtual memory or paging file quota is available to complete the specified operation.)", error number '0xC0000017'. Curiously, the mouse scroll-wheel also doesn't work in System Informer's window (but works in the 'Changelog' window), whereas in versions before 3.1.24366 the mouse scroll-wheel does work in System Informer's window.

Another issue on versions 3.1.24366 and newer is that if changes are made that need the ‘SystemInformer.exe.settings.xml’ file to be updated, the file is unchanged when System Informer exits and then crashes.

If the 'System' menu item is selected, then the 'Options...' item is selected, then 'Close' is pressed, the same crash occurs.

Could (Unable to save application settings on Windows 2016 Server #2412) be part of this bug?

I tried starting the newer versions in Administrator and regular User accounts, deleted the 'SystemInformer.exe.settings.xml' and used the default 'SystemInformer.exe.settings.xml' from the downloaded .ZIP file, but the crash on exit persists.

I used System Informer in portable installs.

Version 3.1.24333 is the last working package on this PC.

Thanks for the free tool.

Try renaming or deleting the settings file:

%APPDATA%\SystemInformer\settings.xml

Try renaming or deleting the settings file:

%APPDATA%\SystemInformer\settings.xml

  1. Both renamed, then deleted the '%APPDATA%\SystemInformer\settings.xml' file. No change, System Informer still crashes. Version 3.1.24333-release continues to work even without the '%APPDATA%\SystemInformer\settings.xml' file. Deleted all files in the '%APPDATA%\SystemInformer" folder, no change, still crashes. Version 3.1.24333-release works as expected.

  2. As mentioned previously, the 'SystemInformer.exe.settings.xml' file was deleted and the default from the new ZIP file used. No change, still crashes. Deleted the 'SystemInformer.exe.settings.xml' file entirely, still crashes.

  3. Tried to run all the above in Administrator and standard User accounts, no change, still crashes.

  4. Created a new folder, unzipped the portable version into it, no change, still crashes. Version 3.1.24333 works as expected in a new folder.

  5. Something drastic changed between versions 'systeminformer-3.1.24333-release' and 'systeminformer-3.1.24366-release' that has remained in all the newer versions. It seems Unable to save application settings on Windows 2016 Server #2412 is part of the problem as other users have reported whether using Windows 10 or Windows 11.

  6. Another issue as pointed out before is the mouse scroll-wheel does not scroll the lines of information in System Informer's window (the keyboard cursor keys still work, and the scroll bar on the right side of the windows moves normally using the mouse arrow), but the scroll wheel works as expected in systeminformer-3.1.24333-release.

  7. I disconnected the mouse to see if it possibly was not working with the post 3.1.24333 releases, but using only keyboard input the newer releases still crash.

  8. Is there anyone who can test this out?

Tested systeminformer-3.2.25045.1011-canary:

  • Mouse scroll-wheel now works in the main window

  • If the 'System' menu item is selected, then the 'Options...' item is selected, then 'Close' is pressed, the same crash still occurs

  • System Informer still crashes on exit in Admin and normal User accounts, and the 'SystemInformer.exe.settings.xml' is not updated

Is this the only report about this problem? Can anyone duplicate this issue?
