versioningit doesn't seem to provide a way for overriding the version number with an environment variable, making it trickier to build from a release tarball. Preferably use setuptools-scm, https://setuptools-scm.readthedocs.io/en/latest/ , which respects $SETUPTOOLS_SCM_PRETEND_VERSION
