See README for the original README.
This is a copy of Wietse Venema's unproto program, which allows
you to compile ANSI C programs using pre-ANSI C compilers.
This version is based on unproto 1.6 from 1993. It contains
modifications and additions by Udo Munk and Nils M Holm.
Udo provided a compiler driver script for the Coherent
operating system.
I (Nils) have made the following modifications:
(1) Line number control directives other than "#" can be
generated (Makefile variable LINE).
(2) Line number directives with leading blanks are accepted.
This modification allows to compile programs containing
indented #include directives, which make some preprocessors
emit line control directives with leading blanks.
(3) Changed some code that caused warning messages on modern
compilers, but without breaking K&R C compatibility. This
means that there are still a lot of warnings left.
*** DO NOT FIX THOSE! ***
The purpose of unproto is to compile on ancient platforms!
Fixing these warnings will most probably break
compatibility with those platforms!
