Hmm, it would be interesting to understand why the app is sent to the background instead of just being minimized. When minimized, you can easily switch back to it and view the counter, for example. Personally, I don't see much point in sending it to the background, especially when the tray icon is disabled.
Steps to reproduce
OS: Debian GNU/Linux 12 (bookworm) x86_64
Host: ThinkPad L13 Gen 3
Kernel: 6.6.69-x64v3-xanmod1
Resolution: 2560x1440
DE: GNOME 43.9
WM: Mutter
WM Theme: Adwaita
Theme: Colloid-Dark [GTK2/3]
Icons: WhiteSur-dark [GTK2/3]
Terminal: tilix
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 PRO 5675U with Radeon Graphics (12) @ 4.388GHz
GPU: AMD ATI 07:00.0 Barcelo
Memory: 4302MiB / 14813MiB
Expected behaviour
Close button minimize to "dash to dock" and app is shown in overview.
