e.g. if you upload a big thing like https://matrix.org/_matrix/media/r0/download/matrix.org/YMGWVTMYFjtsLILmqvrMpVwV then you get a large blank thumbnail :(

This is not a matrix-media-repo problem - the error is coming from Synapse.
