NOTES FOR MAINTAINERS

CONFIGURE AND BUILD PROCESS
===========================
UPS is now configured through GNU Autoconf. This reads "configure.in" and
writes the "configure" script. When "configure" is run by someone building
UPS it creates "Makefile", "ifdefs.h", etc. from the templates "Makefile.in",
"ifdefs.h.in", etc.
You need to install GNU Autoconf only if you need to change "configure.in"
and generate a new "configure" script". This would be necessary if you
wanted to add a new check for a header file or library routine.
Debugging and testing
---------------------
By default the "configure" script sets CFLAGS to "-g -O2" for 'gcc'. You
can stop this with the '--enable-debug'. This may be required if you want
to debug UPS using UPS on Intel x86 where there are problems with reading
registers, and for the test programs where 'gcc' optimises away variables.
This should do it :
./configure --enable-debug ; make
Testing with different compilers
--------------------------------
You must run the "configure" script again to change to a different compiler.
This should do it :
rm config.cache ; make clean ; CC=gcc ./configure ; make
Configuration files
--------------------
configure.in - input to Autoconf
configure - the generated script
config.guess - used by 'configure'
config.sub - used by 'configure'
install-sh - alternative to standard 'install' program which will
be used if the standard program is not suitable
Makefile.in - template for Makefile
Makefile.conf.in -
ups/Makefile.in - template for ups/Makefile
med3/Makefile.in - template for med3/Makefile
ifdefs.h.in - template for ifdefs.h, the Makefile will copy it to
its expected location when invoked.
Other files
-----------
config.cache - holds results of tests done by 'configure'.
config.status - recreates Makefile, ifdefs.h etc. using the last
results of 'configure' (i.e. from config.cache).
Creating a TAR file for release
-------------------------------
The standard way is to do 'make testrelese' with $RELTAG set, e.g.
RELTAG=3.35 make testrelease
This will create releases/ups-3.35.tar.gz and releases/ups-3.35.md5.
Creating an RPM
---------------
Copy the TAR file to the SOURCES directory, probably /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES.
Create the RPM specification file with
RELTAG=3.35 make rpmspec
and copy it to the SPECS
directory. Change to the SPECS directory, su to 'root' and build the RPM
with 'rpm -ba <spec_file>'. This will create a binary RPM and source SRPM.
Currently the binary RPM only includes 'ups', the manual page and the BUGS,
CHANGES and README files. The stand-alone interpreter will get its own RPM
at some point.
